Losing a tooth can cause your self-esteem to nosedive, but there is a way to smile back : with a dental implant, which offers you more than just esthetic enhancement - it's also durable enough to allow you to eat anything you want without the possibility of embarassing dental 'mishaps'.

What can dental implants do?
"They can be used to restore a tooth with a porcelain crown that looks almost like a patient's own natural tooth," says Dr. Sim Tang Eng, a Kuala Lumpur-based implantologist and esthetic dentist. "In cases where more than a few teeth are missing, it is possible to place fewer implants than the number of missing teeth and restore them with a bridge. For example, five missing teeth may be replaced by just three implants. Since crowns and bridges are not always viable options for various clinical reasons, implants can also be utilized to support and stabilize dentures, making them more secure and comfortable," explains Dr. Sim.

The most common types of implants
Endosteal implants: These are implants that are inserted into the jaw bone, and is the most used type of implant. "Most popular is the screw type implant. The older blade and cylinder designs aren't used as much anymore.
Subperiosteal implants: These consist of a metal framework that's placed on top of the jaw bone, beneath the gum. "The framework has posts which protrude through the overlying gum to provide support for dentures. This type of implant is slowly becoming obsolete it is not as predictable as the endosteal variety.

The advantages of implants
You'll feed more confident!
"Dental implant-supported crowns or bridges are the closest one will get to having natural teeth. They look, feel and function so much like a patient's own teeth. No one will ever know that you've had a replacement tooth," says Dr. Sim.

They'll save your teeth
According to Dr. Sim, a dental implant won't affect your adjacent teeth like a bridge will, since your neighboring teeth are not altered to support the implant. "This is a very significant benefit for the overall oral health of a patient. In addition, the integration of the implant into the jaw bone also helps prevent the shrinkage of the bone which normally occurs after a tooth loss."

They're convenient
"Implants eliminate the embarassing inconvenience of having to remove your dentures as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place."

They're durable
They will last for many years with good care.
They're reliable
"The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable, and are considered an excellent option when you are considering a tooth replacement.

Expert Strategy
"Dental implant placement involves surgery, so you've got to be honest about any medical conditions you may have and any medications you are taking or allergic to," says Dr. Sim. "Good oral hygiene is the key to the long-term success of your implants, as well as a pre-requisite for dental implant treatment."

Scaling & Polishing

Leftover food deposits in the oral cavity tend to get stuck at the gum margins and also between teeth. Over time if not removed, these soft food deposits known as plaque, will hardened into calculus or tartar. When this happens, no amount of toothbrushing will be able to remove the tartar as it adheres very strongly to teeth. Hence regular cleaning sessions at the dental clinic will help maintain good oral hygiene and prevent gum disease. Dentists use an ultrasonic scaler to clean your pearly whites, so do not feat that your teeth will wear off with regular scaling. After scaling the tartar, polishing is done to ensure a smooth finish and also to remove stains. Scaling & polishing is recommended every 6 months or one year depending on individual.
